How Much Does Wheel Alignment Cost?

Updated October 2026 By RepairCostLab Editorial Team

Expect to pay $90 to $250 at an independent shop for a typical car, and up to $340 at a dealership. An alignment resets the angles of your wheels so the car tracks straight and the tires wear evenly. It is quick, inexpensive, and protects the most expensive wear item on your car: the tires.

What does it do?

A technician measures camber, caster and toe on each wheel with a laser alignment rack and adjusts the suspension and tie rods back to factory specifications. A four-wheel alignment also adjusts the rear axle where possible.

Signs you need this repair

Can you do it yourself?

Difficulty: Pro only (5/5). Accurate alignment requires a computerized alignment rack. String-line methods exist but are not precise enough for modern cars.

Doing it yourself saves the labor portion, roughly $90–$210, so you would pay only for parts ($0–$40).

Is it worth fixing?

Yes. An alignment costs far less than a set of tires, and misalignment can wear out tires in a few thousand miles.

How to save money

Questions to ask your mechanic

  1. Is this a two-wheel or four-wheel alignment?
  2. Can I have the before-and-after measurement printout?
  3. Did you find any worn steering or suspension parts?

Asking for a written, itemized estimate (parts, labor hours and hourly rate) is your right in most states and makes quotes easy to compare.

Frequently asked questions

How often do I need an alignment?

Every 1 to 2 years, whenever you buy new tires, and after hitting a large pothole or curb.

Two-wheel or four-wheel alignment?

Most modern cars with independent rear suspension need a four-wheel alignment. Many solid-axle trucks only need a front alignment.

Does an alignment fix vibration?

Usually not. Vibration is more often caused by unbalanced tires or worn parts. An alignment fixes pulling and uneven wear.
