How Much Does Radiator Fan Replacement Cost?

Updated October 2026 By RepairCostLab Editorial Team

Expect to pay $210 to $800 at an independent shop for a typical car, and up to $975 at a dealership. The electric radiator fan pulls air through the radiator when the car is moving slowly or stopped. If it fails, the engine overheats in traffic but runs fine on the highway.

What does it do?

The engine computer switches the fan on when coolant temperature rises or the A/C is running, keeping air flowing across the radiator and A/C condenser.

Signs you need this repair

Can you do it yourself?

Difficulty: Intermediate (3/5). Usually a few bolts and one connector, though some cars require removing the radiator support or air intake.

Doing it yourself saves the labor portion, roughly $110–$400, so you would pay only for parts ($100–$400).

Is it worth fixing?

Yes. A dead fan leads to overheating in traffic, which can cause far more expensive engine damage.

How to save money

Questions to ask your mechanic

  1. Did you test the fan relay, fuse and temperature sensor?
  2. Is it the complete fan and shroud assembly?
  3. Is the radiator itself in good condition?

Asking for a written, itemized estimate (parts, labor hours and hourly rate) is your right in most states and makes quotes easy to compare.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive with a broken radiator fan?

On the highway, briefly. In traffic, the engine will overheat. Watch the gauge closely.

Should the radiator fan run after the engine is off?

On many cars, yes, for a few minutes after a hot drive. It is normal.

Why does my A/C get warm at stoplights?

The fan also cools the A/C condenser. A failing fan often shows up first as warm A/C at idle.
