How Much Does Brake Master Cylinder Replacement Cost?

Updated October 2026 By RepairCostLab Editorial Team

Expect to pay $190 to $620 at an independent shop for a typical car, and up to $760 at a dealership. The master cylinder turns pedal pressure into hydraulic pressure for all four brakes. When its internal seals wear, the pedal slowly sinks and braking power drops.

What does it do?

Pressing the brake pedal pushes pistons inside the master cylinder, which pressurize brake fluid sent through the lines to each caliper or wheel cylinder.

Signs you need this repair

Can you do it yourself?

Difficulty: Intermediate (3/5). The unit must be bench-bled before installation and the whole system bled afterwards.

Doing it yourself saves the labor portion, roughly $110–$320, so you would pay only for parts ($80–$300).

Is it worth fixing?

Yes. Braking is safety-critical, and the part is moderately priced.

How to save money

Questions to ask your mechanic

  1. Did you rule out air in the lines and leaking calipers?
  2. Is the unit new or remanufactured?
  3. Does the quote include bench bleeding and a full bleed?

Asking for a written, itemized estimate (parts, labor hours and hourly rate) is your right in most states and makes quotes easy to compare.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to drive with a bad master cylinder?

No. Braking power can fail suddenly. Have it repaired right away.

How long does a master cylinder last?

Often 100,000 miles or more.

Does the brake booster need replacing too?

Not usually. A hard pedal points to the booster; a sinking pedal points to the master cylinder.
